Thanks, that worked like a charm.  Furthermore, man pages don't have 
funny characters littered through out.  Also, there was a perl library Date::Manip
which spewed unicode warnings everywhere and it no longer does this.  
I realize this is only bandaging things, but for now this gets us moving.
