A newbie question -- may be off-topic problems building Java

Hello all,

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask this
elementary question. But if it isn't I'd appreciated
to be pointed in the right direction where I may get
some help.

I'm very new to Linux as you may guess by this
question. I'm trying to build a Java application.
The problem is I get an error that some package is not
found even though I have the directory where the
package is located in my CLASSPATH. The package is
something like:
                  src.servers
and it's located under:
                 /home/myHome/work/lib/

I have /home/myHome/work/lib in my CLASSPATH and set
the classpath at compile time by using -classpath but
java compiler is not finding the package in the
CLASSPATH. I'm using j2sdk1.4.0. What am I doing
wrong?

Thanks in advance
