Thanks for the suggestions, but they did not solve the problem.
"yum update" still bounces between the two packages.

I have encountered similar issue like this in the past.

Or, one that I just had while upgrading from CentOS 5.3 to 5.4 at work,
yum -y update yum
yum clean all
yum update
