I think the problem is generally because that your computer ignores ICMP
echo packet.

you can first check /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all, whether it's
set to 1 or not.

then, maybe you can check your iptables.
see if you have "DROP" on icmp packets.
