What I tend to do to avoid issues with RHEL5 dependencies is to use a
project like XAMPP
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html
This gives me an RHEL dependency free environment to run a LAMP setup,
as it references its own version of MySQL,PHP and other important libs.
You might like to give it a go.

Yes, the issue was the firewall settings - running 'service iptables stop' disabled the firewall and allowed me to access the server from an external machine.

1)Make sure that the LAMP server's IP is pingable by the other
desktop(s). This will ensure you have the correct Ethernet, IP, subnet
and default gateway settings.
2)If 1) is OK, try to do as root on the LAMP server a 'service iptables
stop'. Then try to access the web page from the other machine. If it
works, the problem has to do with your firewall rules.
