You are getting to the box - the output shows you that. Next check is to see
if you have root login enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_conf. Check also for the
additional fields where password is enabled.

Even with root login disabled, or password issues, he'd get a login prompt.  If he isn't getting that (which I don't know because for some reason I'm not receiving his emails, just the replies) then I would suspect the ssh daemon has issues.
