1. look in the output of ifconfig and you'll see a "collisions" field which should have a value of 0. 2. look at the output of either "ethtool <interface>", or mii-tool <interface>, and you will see what the port speed is. This must match the port speed of your switch (your network guys will tell you if the switch is 100Mb or 1000Mb etc). Look for output like this which says the interface is running at 100Mb/s. This is bad if you're connected to a 1000Mb switch.
