Hi there;

Domain refers exclusively to the domain_namespace: a group of hosts, each
with its unique name to which a common domain name is appended and thus
sharing a domain namespace... www.linux.tld , xxx.linux.tld , zzz.linux.tld
...

Zone refers to a collection of data which not only holds the host to ip
information, but also which hosts are responsible for the domain, which
hosts are mail exchangers for the domain, who's responsible for maintaining
the domain information, whether there are or not subdomains...

In the example you coined yourself: '_name' would be the host name ;
'linux' would be the domain name and 'top_' would be the the top level
domain...

Believe it or not, this is harder to explain than to understand...

Cheers
