Try this: In /etc/nsswitch.conf you probably have an entry like this:
passwd: files ldap
shadow: files ldap
group: files ldap
Edit it (in runlevel 1) to this:
passwd: files
shadow: files
group: files
And reboot and see if that fixes it.
I'd be willing to bet it does.
