     From a root prompt, type     java -version   

	Normally java installs within /usr/java  so you can always look into
there.  If you have a developer's kit, it includes the JRE.  For example, my
RHEL4 box has everything within /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03, for the 1.6 update 3
Java developer kit.  The JRE files are within a jre subdirectory there.
