hi there

typing uname -a would give you the kernel version which allows you to
approximate the age of the distro
RHEL4 is based on the 2.6 kernel line whereas RH4 would be 2.4 or earlier

i have a Dell L400 which is about 8 yrs old. it has 256MB of RAM and
used to have an 8GB hard drive (now replaced with a 16GB SSD)
i use a broadcom 802.11g wifi card and it all works very well using fedora 8.
it tends to get a bit hot doing intensive stuff like makewhatis but is
ideal for what i do with it which is pretty much what you want to do
with your laptop.

best wishes

mike
