dont bother ive just spent all of sat trying, theres a problem with vmware
104 and redhat derived os
you canot create containers or vhosts.
i switched to opensuse 10.3 64v bit and all the problems went, just
install opensuse without kde gnome, and use fvwm2 install x also
then install the vmware web monitor and console
you will need a native linux one even if you manage from windows as only
the localy installed vmware console can import vhosts, should you ever
want to restore a vhost from backup

Is anyone aware of a minimal (no X libraries) RHEL4 or 5 VMWare image
floating around? I'd like to do some testing and this would be most
useful.

errors, after rebooting while starting X11 I am getting following error.
"Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthdir) is set tp /var/gdm
but this does not exist. Please correct GDM configuration
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and restart gdm."

Manjiri,I tried emailing you directly, but couldn't At any rate, try
this, if there is a problem email me directly.
make sure /var exists if you do a df (start the server in run level 3)
it looks like /var is not coming up. if it isn't it wont show in df. if
it is coming up,
do a cd /var and see what it looks like.
you may have done a rsync -av /var /newv instead of rsync -av /var/
newvar that trailing slash is very important. If you forgot the trailing
slash, then there will be a subdirectory in /var called var.
if the /var directory only has one subdirectroy called var, then reboot
back into single user mode go into the /var/var directory, and do a:
mv * ..
then reboot back to normal runtime.

I'm writing this summary message because of people requests. I haven't
tried
all of this. I just collected it and organized it.
You've got a big storage. Now what?
The short answer is: "Just connect it. It should work."
I'll play safe by saying that the following applies to <10TB storage. Some
people reported file systems of 80TB.
Things to watch out for:
- Make sure the driver you are using or the storage itself don't restrict
you from making big partitions or file systems.
- fdisk creates partitions up to 2.1TB in size. Use "parted" instead.
- RHEL5 supports up to 8TB ext3 file system. To create bigger then 8TB
use
option "-F" and 4K blocks.
Your options are:
- If the storage is connected to a RAID controller you can use the
controller to create smaller logical partitions. Then combine them with
LVM.
- If you really want to partition the drive use parted.
While partitioning if you run into this message:

you can just ignore it. It's informational (based on a few people
replies).
If you don't like parted you can still use fdisk to create a few 2TB
partitions and then use LVM.
- Use LVM on the raw device. Don't partition.
This is what I did and it worked for me.
Make sure you wipe out the MBR first:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=63
(count=1 should work too but 63 won't hurt either)
Create the pv, vg and lv:
pvcreate /dev/sdX
vgcreate <vg name> /dev/sdX
lvcreate -L <size> -n <name> -v vg_name
Now you have to create the file systems. Some people recommend XFS.
If you try to create bigger then 8TB ext3 file system make sure you use
option "-F" and 4K blocks:
mkfs -t ext3 -F -b 4096 /dev/vg00/lvol01

Hi,
I've got a DAS DELL MD1000 with a bunch of SATA drives in RAID 5
configuration with total space of 5.4TB. This box is attached to a
CentOS5 system (kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5).
Any idea how to make this space usable?
Is there a limit how big a partition can be? What is the work around?
Is there a limit how big a file system ca be?
I've tried to partition it but no matter how bug partition I create
fdisk spits out these messages on the console:

I decided to not partition the drive and use LVM but the physical volume
stopped at 2TB.
So, right now I can't use LVM because of this 2TB limit and I'm not sure
if I partition the drive how good these partitions are because of the
the message from fdisk.

Since three-quarters of everything I found ended with "so how the hell
*do* you enable users to change their own passwords", and no answer, let
me give the answers.
In /usr/local/etc/openldap/slapd.conf, the ACL is

NOTE THAT EACH STANZA *MUST* END WITH A BLANK LINE.
Then, the magic incantation with ldappasswd, I wrapped with a tiny shell
script, since ldappasswd *first* asks for the new password, then, as an
afterthough, it asks for the current, like no password program I've ever
seen. The wrapper is (and this assumes that your users are in the d/b
under ou=people):
#!/bin/bash
thisuser=`whoami`
echo "About to update $thisuser's password"
echo
read -p "Current password: " -s opwd
echo
read -p "New password: " -s npwd
echo

Hi Wayne,
Thank for the reply . You were right. It was my mistake that I rsync
/var instead of /var/ . It works now. Only glitch is while starting X it
stops at "system logger " for long time , then says failed then it
finally boots.
One more question I have is it possible to extend /usr which is
currently part of root. What I mean is can I just take out /usr and
extend it to new hard drive by creating new Volume group etc.

Given that it looks like there's a problem with both sda2 and sda3, I
wonder
about a hardware error.
The other thing you could try is to take it down to single user mode,

there is nothing output when i check /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure

Given that it looks like there's a problem with both sda2 and sda3, I
wonder
about a hardware error.
The other thing you could try is to take it down to single user mode,
umount
the partitions, and run fsck on 'em.
The service is running well ,so i can't reboot and run fsck .
i am afraid after i do that,the server will not start!!
It may be caused by hardware problem.
And i know i will shutdown it and check sonner or later.
But now i want to known how to find the problem.

I need a rather quick answer to this, so will ask the question while
continuing googling:
I've just upgraded the memory on an HP/Compaq DL380 G4 server running
RHEL5, from 4GB to 6GB. But Red Hat only sees 4GB.
A quick google tells me that I either need to install the kernel-PAE
package, or the hugemem kernel. Is that correct? Yum shows me that
kernel-PAE is available, but not kernel-hugemem.
This server runs Oracle and is quite important to the business, so I
can't just "have a go" and hope upgrading the kernel doesn't break
anything.
Any advice on this will be appreciated very much.
