Phil,

I can't be sure (for obvious reasons . . . ) but I believe kernel-devel does not hold the full kernel sources, just sufficient to allow modules to be built for the current kernel. (That's how it is with CentOS.)

>From a quick check on my system, at the head of the kernel source tree (2.6.18-53.1.4) du -hxs returned 2.3GB. If you have something considerably less than that then you definitely don't have the full source tree.
