The exact same tape drive works fine on a different Linux system. So it seems to be a driver or installation problem, not the tape drive. Slightly ambiguous. Was that the same tape drive that was attached to the server? According to the man pages, tell "is available on some Tandberg and Wangtek streamers and some SCSI-2 tape drives" No explicit reference to Quantum 8000 DLT. Just in case, have you checked for firmware upgrades?
