Seems like the file system on your hard drive is corrupted (broken?). Run
fsck as root (by giving the root password)and see what that does (if
anything?). On a good day, fsck repairs file system and you can continue
normally.

Remember to always shutdown/reboot with shutdown.

If You give root password , you can reach the command prompt. Run the scan
disk. I think if u repeatedly dont shutdown your pc properly, this may
occur.
