I'm mounting a SAMBA file system for read/write access from my RedHat 9

Hallo Andy,

Your probably running into the problem of your base file system using a umask of 022. You will have to reset that, or modify the equivalent umask setting with Samba as well. You should add create mask = 777 if you want to go that route. Hope this helps.
