I worked with informix for 7 years as tech. support eng before the ibm accusition.

That returns me to my question, when Oracle asks me to mount a tape
device for use as a backup device, what does it mean? There has to be
someone out there using a tape device to back up Oracle databases.

With Informix, I can just give it the regular tape device and it knows
what to do. (/dev/st0)
