Anyhow, as I attempted to contribute in my original reply (that seems to be silently discarded by the list for whatever reason), there's e2label command. It can read and write label onto device. Just give it device name as argument (for example e2label /dev/hda). If you want to write label, give it as second argument (e2label /dev/hda something).
