>what dose your /etc/sysconfig/i18n looks like?

  The contents of the file is 

LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
SUPPORTED="de_CH.UTF-8:de_CH:de:fr_CH.UTF-8:fr_CH:fr:en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

    I must say that on one machine if I select from KDE window menu
   Settings ---->Encoding ----> Western European(iso 8659-1) then I can
   Print correctly the German Character. But on another machine I donot see 
   this "Encoding" menu. What I have missed during my OS installation?
