mplayer works but shows wavy lines

I installed mplayer onto my RHEL WS 4 machine.
I can play movies using this command

# mplayer -vo x11 filename.mov

but it shows the video with wavy lines and I can't see the actual video 
playing. I do hear the sound however.

Is there an option I can try to get the video to show correctly?
