printing transparent images

I'm having a problem printing a transparent PNG image in a PDF document. The background of the image is printing as black instead of being transparent. (and no there isn't a black background under the image :)). The same document prints fine from windows. Is there some super secret ppd setting that i'm missing?

The printer i'm using is HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX 600 dpi and the cups version is cups-1.1.17-13.3.36.

Thanks for anyone that can help with this.

Tom
