To the OP ... perhaps the IDE driver is picking up your SATA drives first
and thus the SATA driver doesn't get a chance.

You could use ide0=noprobe and ide1=noprobe as boot options to keep the IDE
drvier from jumping in when it shouldn't...

I've used this with RHEL4 on some HP SATA servers that would use the IDE
driver instead of the SATA driver for drive access.
