You'll want to use the -F flag. For instance: tar -c -F 'mtx -f /dev/changer next' -f /dev/tape -F takes a command as its argument; that command is run when end-of-tape is reached. Note that with -F, you *cannot* use compression. If you want to use compression, you should instead put your tape library in stacker mode and let it change the tapes automatically.
