Wierd. Perhaps the labelling?

Try w/o labelling it: mkfs.ext3 -j -m 1 /dev/hdd1

also, attach o/p of:

fdisk -l

blockdev --getsize /dev/hdd

blockdev --getsize /dev/hdd1

mkdir /home4; mount /dev/hdd1 /home4
