RE: Very slow performance suddenly on redhat 3 es server

I should have been more clear; finding the box over the network is
normal; it's the actual process of authentication that is very slow; for
example, if logging in via ssh with a key, I actually see the message
login as: and the userid I type for a few seconds and then
Authenticating with public key "rsa-key-20050815" for a few seconds.

Just because it's using local authentication doesn't mean that it's not
a network issue.  You could be experiencing DNS issues, perhaps timing
out talking to your nameservers.
