I had issues with my HP DL380s and tape drives. It had to do with the cciss drivers that HP use. I didn't see the devices if I look at /proc/scsi/scsi. The fix was to echo the following in to the cciss driver files in /proc. I made it permanent by adding the lines to /etc/rc.local echo "engage scsi" > /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0 Once this was done the system saw the tape scsi devices accuratly and the device files were created.
