Jim, Thanks for the advice. In the last few days I have received comments from other people with the same point. I agree it is not worth the risk. I have already installed Perl 5.8.7 into a separate directory tree and recompiled the necessary packages. The application works just fine. I setup something similar on an HP box about 2 years ago. Instead of messing with the Perl that came with the OS, I installed and built perl from source(from perl.org) in it's own environment. You will have to do some reading and research. Unpack the tar and read the README's very carefully. You don't. If you need 5.8.7 for specific applications, you install into /usr/local or /opt and then point those applications to the different instance.
