The primary reason that I tend to recommend languages like tcl, etc. before java is that one can focus more quickly on the problem solution without having the full weight of a gui development framework as a hurdle. Yes, there are performance concerns with Java GUIs, but done right you can deal with most of those. Gives you the option of switching OSs later should you decide that serves you better.
