SMP boot disk

I can't make an SMP boot disk for some reason on Red Hat Linux 9.
Everything is fine when I write it, but when I try to boot from it, the
boot fails for some reason. When I make a boot disk for the non-SMP
kernel, it works just fine (it kinda has to, since my computer will only
boot off CD, floppy, and SCSI and I have no SCSIs...).
Can I get some help here????
