I think he's remembering crypt'd passwords which have been deprecated
for some time now.

as far as I know the max password length is 256 chars (unless this has
changed in RHEL4/FC4). For root and all normal users.
when was it 8 chars?
I have used 12+ char root passwords for several years now.
