Hi,
I don't quite understand what you are saying. I can't use a passive mode once I log into the remote server because my problem is that I can't log into the remote server in the first place. This appears to be because setting the proxy variable does not seem to work.

try tu use a passive mod after you log in the remote server

ftp ftp.server.ie
ftp> passive
Passive mode on.
ftp> dir
...
