If your cdrom drive is on the same ide interface as your hardrive, you may have to turn lba off. Your gui may be auto-mounting the c.d. drive and that is causing the hanging. To test this theory, startup in runlevel 3 (edit inittab) and after bootup, put a c.d. in the drive. Them mount the c.d. manually. If your system hangs right away, taht is your problem. If it doesn't well, the good news is you have taken one more possibility out of the picture :-).
