Is there some reason you must use zip?  If you use the gzip or bzip2
formats you will get smaller file sizes, and they can handle the large
files.

For example:  tar jcf myarchive.tar.bz2 files files files files ...

It will take a _long_ time, though.  You really ought to try and break up
your archive into several smaller chunks.
