Stuart--

I installed:
xorg-x11
fonts-xorg-base (triggered by xorg-x11)

I found that I already had these packages installed:
xorg-x11-xfs
xorg-x11-libs

but xfs was not running ... so I started it:
service xfs start

and I was able to launch vncserver and connect to it just fine.

I then found I needed to install kdebase to get my darling Kate text
editor. I did, and I am now a happy camper!

Thanks for your help!
