dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null 

will read the whole disk and report bad sectors

you may add bs=<track_size> to go faster and conv=noerror

crc errors come very often from a dying media, but they can also happen
with electrical problems such as bad grounding, weak power unit, sudden
power off
