I cant get the vmware tools to install properly, so I cant sync off the host clock. Vmware tools cause X to not boot. So my last chance is to try the hz=100 option.

Yes, but only with the new Workstation 5. The 4.5 series fails as you have noted. I think I had to use clock=pit. I'm max'ed out on VM's at the moment so I can't boot to check.
