Make sure that this file > hasn't been changed. Ahhh.... that's it !!! My /etc/crontab is all wrong. It contains a 'custom' cron job for root that's supposed to be in /var/spool/cron/root. I am not surehow this happened though, for as far as I can remember, I usually use kcron to edit crontabs. I must have not had my morning coffee when I did this.... .
