Another option, use Mondo Rescue to backup to CD: http://www.mondorescue.org/ I found that either one of those (depends on your situation / need) is easier than manually tar directories. I found that 'dump' is not reliable in linux machines. I vaguely recall there is even a risk of corruption that was mentioned by Linus Torvalds in the linux kernel mailing list, so he deprecated that.
