If ssh id not starting up, check ur syslog for errors.

You can check ssh is up or not by using ps command
# ps -ae | grep ssh
  648 ?         0:00 sshd

And also by using netstat command as

netstat -na | grep  LISTEN

which would show you the following if ssh is alive,
tcp        0      0  *.22                   *.*                     LISTEN


Yes this waz the first thing i check, the daemon dies...netstat shows no active connection on port 22, i have to restart the SSH and again after sometimes it dies ...
