I had the same problem, "Init(x) respawning too fast", way back when and I got around it by commenting out the following line in /etc/inittab: #x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon That fixed it for me. When it enters init level 5, upon boot up, I get the typical error of "Init(x) respawning too fast" which after much research I determined to mean that the X windows subsystem isn't starting. >From: "Smith, Albert" <Albert.Smith@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> >Reply-To: General Red Hat Linux discussion list <redhat-list@xxxxxxxxxx> >To: "General Red Hat Linux discussion list" <redhat-list@xxxxxxxxxx> >Subject: RE: How to manually start gnome? >Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 19:04:55 -0500 > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx > > [mailto:redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ed Greshko > > Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 6:27 PM > > To: General Red Hat Linux discussion list > > Subject: Re: How to manually start gnome? > > > > Seth G wrote: > > > I just installed Enterprise Linux WS and get the typical > > error "Init "x" > > > respawning too fast" when X windows won't start. > > > > > > I'm trying to start it manually to get a more explicit > > error (yes I've > > > checked /var/log/messages) but I guess startx has been deprecated. > > > > > > What's the new method for starting gnome manually?
