RE: How to manually start gnome?

Well, I just want to get the windowing system working at all. When it enters 
init level 5, upon boot up, I get the typical error of "Init(x) respawning 
too fast" which after much research I determined to mean that the X windows 
subsystem isn't starting.

gdm is the gnome display manager which handles the login and everything
else. If you just want to use Xwindows for just that session for the
logged in user only then run startx. If you want it globally the put
your self at run level 5. It should start all the needed resources.
