Try adding a user with the same id as on your XP box. Then use smbpasswd to create a password for the Linux user which is the same as the password for that user on XP. AFAIK the Linux pw doesn't have to be the same as the Samba pw, but I keep them all consistent just to make it easier to follow.

Of course depending on your security req's you might need something better than this.
