On FC3, and perhaps other distributions, there is a:

/sbin/generate-modprobe.conf utility.  It has the caveat:

    echo "Usage: $0 [--stdin] [modprobe.conf]"
    echo "   Converts your current modules setup to modprobe.conf."
    echo "   Don't trust it too much."

at the beginning of the script file.  I've never used it but may 
offer some help.
