I've tried both. One thing I just noticed, is when I run a netstat -ap, it lists the first few lines, hangs for a while, and then finishes up. It appears that it is hanging on the socket that bind is listening on. When you restart RedHat do you see any messages regarding bind in the output? Eyeball the entries in your named.conf file and bounce them against the file names in /var/named to see if they match.
