Tx for the continued interest. I am not able to login as any user also! I had not tried it previously, I did give the sync command. The passwd files & the shadow files are ok.

Hmmm, when you set the password in Single User Mode, did you run "sync" and gracefully restart the server? If not, then the change of the password might not ever have made it to disk.
One other thing you might try (just to make this easier) When in Single-User-Mode, edit the /etc/sudoers file and give one of the known-good-login users privs to run "sudo /bin/su -" so that you don't have to reboot a gazillion times to find the problem.
