Unless you have some special requirements it isn't necessary to learn iptables.


You can always use one of the fine iptables frontend tools available. Mine has always been shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net/). And, in the event that you do have some special requirements, the hooks are there to integrate that with shorewall.
