By default, MySQL runs on port 3306.  Do you happen to have anything
else running on that port?  Possibly another MySQL process?  :)

I also believe that MySQL's default socket file is
srwxrwxrwx    1 mysql    mysql           0 Dec  1 17:17
/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
which is specified in your /etc/my.cnf file.
