Well you can do

:syntax off

Put "syntax off" in .vimrc in your login directory.

But I found I rather liked the highlighting if I ran with a light background
with dark text rather than vice versa.

Subject: vim vs. vi

Hello,

I've used vi on Solaris for so long that vim on Linux is a bit of a
stumbling block. Is there a way to turn off the syntax highlighting and
make it act a little bit more like Sun VI?

Thanks,

-brian
