Since sun appears to be doing an 'open source' release of solaris 10, how
compatible is that with linux/RH linux?

Sun has announced to open source Solaris 10 at some future time. It's not there now, and we have no idea how it will look if/when it appears. After all, Solaris 10 by itself is not even shipping yet.

I was curious as to what different perspectives are regarding what Solaris
offers .vs Linux...

An open source Solaris does not exist. There's no point in speculating in any sort of comparison untill we see the license and the source.
