RH provides kernel-bigmem-2.4.20-31.9.i686.rpm  - binary kernel with >4GB RAM  support.

Regarding kernel compilation - probably "make mrproper" can help; see http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/ch-custom-kernel.html for details.
